Volunteerism to Solidarity
Omladinska organizacija Svitac
Brčko district, Bosnia and Herzegovina

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Svitac is a multi-ethnic youth arts organisation in based in Brčko, in the northeast of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since 1998 they have worked in Brčko applying creative arts and education activities to encourage reconciliation within the community following the devastating mid-1990s Bosnian war that the land has yet to really recover from. They know from experience that working on shared interests can help strengthen a community as a whole, and overcome perceived boundaries between peoples or with their environment. They organise a wide variety of workshops throughout the year, focusing on arts and education and also organise summer camps for the children of Brčko every year. The volunteers work in the children and youth center in all areas.

ACCOMMODATION, FOOD AND TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS
Svitac’s volunteers live in a shared apartment or house, which is rented by Svitac. There is a house where three volunteers can stay, and a flat where two can be. Both locations have internet access and volunteers are also more than welcome to use the internet connection in Svitac’s office or at the youth center. Each volunteer has their own bedroom and a shared kitchen, living room and bathroom. Two-week volunteers may sometimes sleep on a sofa-bed in the living room or in the available spare room. Sheets and towels are provided, unless volunteers want to bring their own.

TRAINING DURING THE PROJECT
Departure Training in Germany - On Arrival Training and MidTerm Evaluation provided by the National Agency - introduction and orientation training at arrival - basic nonformal learning, group dynamics and basic youthwork - language support - mentor support - coordinator support

VOLUNTEER PROFILE
Svitac is particularly keen to engage with volunteers that have art, music and language skills, as these are our core focus areas. We do not require volunteers to be professionals or to hold formal qualifications, but we are interested in volunteers with general skills and who are capable of adapting to the challenges of working with different age groups and an unfamiliar working environment.
