About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program, and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
About the position
The Research Officer collates and analyses information on Turkey’s political system and regional relations, supports the policy team with media monitoring, and contributes to the Embassy’s community outreach and communication functions.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Monitor, analyse and report on key and emerging political, security, social and legislative developments and issues in Turkey, Azerbaijan and Georgia.
- Build and maintain a wide network of contacts with Turkish and international partners to support advocacy and analysis.
- Prepare and distribute a range of written material, including reports and briefings, and provide interpreting and translation services as required.
- Monitor and evaluate media and social media reports for issues relevant to Australia’s interests and translate political and economic reports, articles and related materials.
- Organise appointments and travel programs for diplomatic staff and manage communication with Turkish contacts on behalf of diplomatic staff.
- Support the Embassy’s social media channels, generate content, monitor responses and other metrics, and provide advice on enhancing engagement.
- Assist with the management of public outreach activities and production of public diplomacy material.
- Promote key messages to the Turkish media and key Turkish decision makers, answer media enquiries and contribute to the development of media strategies.
- Support the management of the Embassy’s Direct Aid Program funding for community development projects.
Qualifications/Experience
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in a related field, including economics, international trade or political science.
- Strong research and analytical skills and the ability to initiate and conceptualise research on key domestic and international issues and policies.
- Understanding of political developments, and legislative and administrative frameworks; familiarity with public and private organisations and civil society; and the ability to support and network with a range of stakeholders.
- Fluency in English and Turkish, and the ability to produce accurate and well-researched written products.
- Demonstrated ability to work flexibly and independently within a small and diverse team.
- Public relations or communications experience is desirable.

C. Ability to develop and harness a broad range of useful contacts which may include members of the Turkish Government, think-tanks, academia, civil society institutions, the business community and other stakeholders to provide information of relevance to senior management.
D. Excellent team-working, interpersonal and stakeholder management skills including experience working with senior level officials, executives and stakeholders.
E. Well-developed written and oral communication skills in both
English and Turkish, with the ability to translate and interpret reports and advise at official meetings.
